Today In Music History

1989

Police were called in to control over 4,000 Bobby Brown fans trying to see him at the HMV Record store in London's Oxford Street, six fans were hospitalised and one had to be given the kiss of life.

An engaging Bobby B. appears

After seeing Bobby Brown's various escapades on television, I wasn't sure what to expect live. He hosted Big O's Celebrity Birthday Bash at Studio 74. The crowd was lighter than I anticipated and was lethargic until Brown got on the mike.

The event happened Saturday but he didn't arrive until about 12:45 a.m. Sunday. After chilling and eating in the VIP room, he joined the party. Brown was surprisingly fun. He sang along to "My Prerogative" and "Every Little Step."

Since Brown blew in the '90s, the DJ spun a lot of hip-hop from that era. Brown sang to most of what the DJ spun, and he cajoled the crowd into dancing instead of standing around. He posed for pictures, and the men in the club were as excited as the women. OK, the guy didn't scream, but I saw several guys doing old New Edition steps. By 1:30 a.m., Bobby joined the ladies on stage for some freaky dancing.

Often celebrity hosts say a quick what's up and retreat to the VIP, but Brown got down with everybody and turned what could have been a weak party into something memorable. No, Whitney didn't show up.

Sheryl Underwood Talks About Bobby & Whitney

On Meeting Bobby Brown: "I met Bobby but I was trying to get with his daddy, Pops. I'm trying to get in the family the old-school way. Bobby was having a good time on [Tom Joyner's] cruise. He was 'Being Bobby Brown,' which is the title of his show, but he wasn't doing anything that any other married man on the boat wasn't doing. He was sowing a little bit of his wild oats, but still remembering that he got a crazy ass wife named Whitney Houston. Hell to the naw! Whitney the type of b-h who would have come up on the boat and whipped a n-a."

Rumors about Whitney Houston: "What I know about Whitney is that it ain't over between her and Bobby Brown. She can rebound from this. She can make a comeback album and get herself together. If Janet Jackson can lose all that weight, then Whitney Houston can pull herself together and come on back in black music."

Cruise Control

It was an overflow crowd in Studio B for both 2:00 a.m. shows by Bobby Brown. Whitney Houston's "King of R&B" wowed the crowd with such cuts as "Every Little Step," "My Prerogative," "Roni" and "Rock Wit'cha." Each night Brown brought a different woman onstage and would simulate some sex act with her. The first night, he had 'Top Model' finalist Tiffany Richardson join him-remember she's the one Tyra Banks screamed at: "I've never screamed at a girl like this in my life!" Since this is a family-friendly column, I can't report exactly what Brown did to her onstage, but let's just say his song "Humpin' Around" captures it quite well! Even better was night two when Brown had Reach Media's Marcelina Olan come onstage. The full- figured favorite gave Brown a lap dance he'll never forget and to top it all off, she picked him up and carried him across the stage. It was unbelievable!

Brown told me that his album is set to bow July 4, and that he's still trying to tour with SWV. He also said he's filmed a couple of movies that are slated to drop this year, and he's excited about the second season of 'Being Bobby Brown.' He claimed his wife wanted to join him on the cruise, but he said no. "She's at home with the kids. I wouldn't allow it. She's doing wonderful, thanks for asking," he added. Brown was such a hit, Joyner invited him back next year.

Wanda Sykes said she was convinced Joyner had struck a deal with the U.S. government to get Brown out of the country. "I was nervous 'cause I thought it was a ploy to take Bobby's ass back to Africa. I thought Tom hooked up with the Bush administration to get Bobby out of here for good since he caused so much trouble in the states," said the comedienne laughing.

MTV'S New Series "Dogs" To Spoof Bobby and Whitney

This is a comedy loosely based on reality, Ross reminds viewers in the interview.
"Hopefully people won't think it's mean - spirited. It's coming from a good place," he says.

The comedian, who is producing a series of eight episodes, adds that he will be an equal-opportunity roaster. "We're going to shine a light on Janet Jackson's fluctuating weight," he says. "And Bobby [Brown] and Whitney [Houston] are going to mistake the two dogs for their own children. They pop out of a dumpster looking for Bobby's wedding ring and find an onion ring, which is just as good."

R&B Beef (Oh No!)

In addition, RL also claims to roll with DJ Whoo Kid and then sings out the phrase, "G-G-G-G-G-G-Unit." Wow, wow, WOW! I don't know where to begin. Is RL, the same dude that sang "I Got Me a Model," a tough guy all of a sudden!? I think not. You can't go from talking about "Butter Love" to warning JE and 112 to watch their backs. I mean what's next...is Slim from 112 going to bring the guns out on RL!? Are the fellas from JE going to slap (not punch) the dudes from Next? Is Next's next album (no pun intended) going to be titled, The Massacre LP? I mean, damn. R&B beef is just so completely ridiculous. At the end of the day, all R&B dudes strive for one thing, anyway...to finesse the panties off a video vixen. So, stick to that. Leave the ammunition at home. Besides, Bobby Brown would kick all your R&B asses. And what he doesn't finish off, Whitney will....

Tom Joyner's Caribbean tour (Review)

From Saturday, May 27 to Friday, June 2, the reggae ambassadors joined the likes of Bobby Brown, Teena Marie, Baby Face and Earth, Wind and Fire on the sixth annual edition of the celebrity luxury tour of the Caribbean.

Bobby Brown performed in a ice-skating rink with accommodation for 1500 people, while the deck provided seating arrangements for over 700 people.

This was the second time for "The Worlers" who missed the festival of the sea last year. "We didn't do it last year, but we did it the year before," Cat said. Speaking of the performances he added, "Bobby Brown was superb, absolutely superb".

Bobby to appear on Smoke Bulga's New Album

"Live Phast," which hits stores this summer, will be released byLife 4 Life Enterprises, Bulga's own label. With or without major-label backing, Bulga is more than capable of scrapping with heavyweights. He rhymes with an old-school swagger, effectively putting style back into the monotonous hardcore rap scene. And "Phastlife" boasts some notable guests who should extend his reach into the the larger rap scene. Among the guests are Bobby Brown, DJ Nasty and Mississippi rhyme wrestler David Banner.

NJS4E Interview with Barry Michael Cooper

I have to say thank you to BBO family member KK for making us aware of the interview. A very special THANK YOU to Andrew Knyte for allowing me to post this interview. I urge all to read the entire piece, its a very good interview, here's just one of Bobby related parts:

" Who else? ... Bobby Brown. How could I forget this guy?

Bobby Brown was the heart and soul of it. Bobby Brown gave it - along with what Teddy Riley was doing, Bobby Brown gave it its motor, its heart. By the time Don't Be Cruel had done 8, 9 million copies, that and the movie New Jack City made NJS THE music of its age. That was it. Bobby Brown and his performances - he was selling out arenas in an hour. And by the time he did "My Prerogative," - I saw him in Chicago on the Heart Break tour - by the time he got to "My Prerogative" it would be ridiculous. You couldn't even hear the song at that point. It was really crazy.

I remember doing a piece on him for Spin Magazine, and I went around with him and we were at George's Music Room - it was actually Regina Daniels' husband - George and Regina Daniels are the defacto managers of R. Kelly. He had a place called George's Music Room somewhere on the South Side of Chicago. Bobby was there to sign autographs. They had about 10 cops out in front of this place. And in less than 20 minutes, and I'm not exaggerating, about 800 fans showed up. It scared me. It was frightening, because I was in the limo with Bobby and they started rocking the limo. The cops had to pull these girls off the car. It was really scary man. This guy was the Rolling Stones, he was The Beatles, he was, all of that wrapped up into one performer and he exemplified NJS like nobody else.

Teddy Riley and Guy definitely. But Bobby gave it a face, he gave it a heart, and he gave it that "umph" that was just crazy. He was like Elvis. He really was. That's who I can compare him too. He was the Rolling Stones, he was The Beatles, he was Elvis all wrapped up into one. And he made New Jack Swing what it was at that time. You didn't think about no other music. Hip-hop had to look to NJS. Pop had to look to NJS. R&B definitely had to look to NJS. Because of Bobby Brown. It was nuts man. So those were the people that I considered best represented NJS."

BOBBY'S BRUISER

May 31, 2006 -- A CATFIGHT broke out between a hot-headed hoochie in Bobby Brown's entourage and a Russian model at new lounge 83 Worth Street the other night. A spy tells us Brown - who was without wife Whitney Houston - showed up with "an entourage of women," one of whom picked a fight with the catwalking girlfriend of owner Jeff Krauss. "Brown's groupie managed to grab the Russian model by the hair and threw her against a wall before security guards escorted her out," we're told. Brown and his better-behaved gal pals were allowed to stay and made the most of it by dancing into the wee hours to DJ Uri Dalal's set.
